The United States has purchased the Cours Saint-Michel site in the Brussels municipality of Etterbeek to construct new buildings for the US Embassy to Belgium and the US Mission to the European Union.

The need for a new location is largely due to the expansion of bilateral and multilateral diplomatic relations, as these two missions work more closely than ever with Belgian and European partners on a wide range of issues, the US announced in a press release.

"We look forward to the next stages of the project, which will provide us with a safe, secure, sustainable, and modern workplace," said US Ambassador to Belgium Michael Adler. "We also look forward to working with key Belgian officials and engaging with our future neighbours in Etterbeek as we bring this vision to life."

The US Ambassador to the EU, Mark Gitenstein, added that this project is "a reflection of our enduring transatlantic ties, which are stronger than ever." The new facilities will provide a sustainable and resilient platform for robust US diplomatic engagement with the EU, he said.

The US diplomatic mission to NATO will remain at its current location within the NATO headquarters building in Haren, part of the City of Brussels.
