As is the case at the end of every winter, the Brussels-Capital Region will start a new asphalting programme to renovate regional roads. Every weekend throughout spring, roads will be asphalted, with the exact date to be announced.
When the temperatures start to rise and the weather improves, Brussels Mobility starts its significant maintenance of the region's roads. Last year, the asphalt season lasted until November due to the mild temperatures, resulting in more than 200,000m² on regional roads being renovated.
"We invest €10 million a year in the maintenance of our roads and cycle paths. This is important because the quality of the roads determines not only the comfort but also the safety of all road users: pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and motorists," said Elke Van den Brandt, the region's Minister for Mobility.
"These interventions are also an opportunity to improve road safety: construction of traffic islands, installation of speed brakes, ochre-coloured cycle paths, new types of bollards and separations to protect vulnerable road users."
The quality of road markings will also be improved by using thermoplastic instead of paint. To minimise traffic disruption, most asphalting work will be carried out at night and during the weekends, when there is less traffic.
What roads and when?
The 2023 asphalting programme was launched on Monday when the first operation was launched on Rue Bollinckx near the western border with Flanders. These works will run until the morning of Saturday 8 April.
On Friday 7 April, Brussels Mobility will start works on the Avenue de la Woluwé between Avenue Marcel Thiry and the eastern regional border.
"The aim is to schedule as many major asphalting works of entire road sections as possible, rather than carrying out minor repairs locally," the agency said in a statement.
Later in the season, Brussels Mobility will take charge over Avenue de Tervueren between the southern border and Chaussée de Tervueren.

Avenue Brugmann at the height of the Vanderkindere tram stop, Chaussée de Waterloo, the exit of the E40 motorway at Rue Colonel Bourg and Boulevard Leopold III in Schaerbeek, and Avenue Ducpétiaux between Parc de Forest and Châtelain are also on the programme.
"Once the necessary permits have been delivered and the exact dates fixed, residents and road users will be informed about the works with house-to-house notices, (digital) information boards and the dedicated page of the Brussels Mobility website," the agency explained. Resurfacing works will continue until autumn 2023.
