A building fire raged on Avenue de Roodebeek in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek on Friday morning. Five people had been taken to the hospital.
One person was seriously injured after jumping out of the window, while four others were overcome by the smoke, the Brussels Fire Brigade reported. Additionally, 14 other people were evacuated from the building.
The fire brigade was notified of the fire at around 09:00, according to the spokesperson Walter Derieuw. "When we arrived, one victim was lying in the street. This was a person who had jumped out of the first-floor window and was seriously injured. A MUG team transferred the person to the hospital."
"The fire is now under control but the exact cause is still unclear," the spokesperson continued. "It will have to be verified whether the stability of the building was affected by the fire."
