About 30 flights of the German airline Lufthansa to and from Brussels Airport in Zaventem between Wednesday evening and Saturday morning have been cancelled due to a strike by Lufthansa's ground staff.

The cancellations concern flights that were due to fly between Brussels Airport and the German cities of Frankfurt or Munich, according to the flight schedule on the airport's website.

"It concerns six flights to and from Munich and 11 flights to and from Frankfurt. In total, 34 flights will be cancelled. We do not expect any additional cancellations to follow," Brussels Airport told Belga News Agency.

The strike is not expected to have any consequences for Lufthansa subsidiary Brussels Airlines; its flights to and from Frankfurt and Munich will continue as planned.

The 60-hour strike at Lufthansa (from Wednesday 20:00 to Saturday 07:10) is an initiative of the Verdi union. Lufthansa previously said the action would disrupt the travel plans of more than 200,000 passengers, who will all be offered an alternative or a refund.

This is not the first strike by Lufthansa ground crews during the ongoing labour dispute. Verdi demands a pay increase of 12.5% and an inflation premium of €3,000 for the approximately 25,000 employees involved.

Train traffic in Germany will also be disrupted on Thursday and Friday due to a strike by the train drivers' union GDL.
