Spring has sprung in Belgium, and the Brussels Government has decked the city centre out in green to celebrate the arrival of the new season.

From Thursday, flowers and ivy will adorn Rue des Eperonniers (next to Grand Place) and the surrounding area in a bid to revitalise the neighbourhood and highlight all that it has to offer in way of heritage, business and culture.

Regional Economic Affairs Minister Fabian Maingain (DéFI) announced the initiative in collaboration with the commercial association 'Renewal of the Grand Place Area'.

"We suggested this idea around ten years ago, with three objectives: to strengthen the identity and commercial character of the area, to increase footfall and to strike a balance between buildings and greenery," the association's president, Andon Akkayan, said.

The flowers and ivy are made from recycled mineral fibre. In addition to the greenery, new umbrellas, LED lights and plant pots have been installed.

The decorations span from Mont des Arts and the Saint Gudula Cathedral to Bourse and will remain in place until 3o September.
