Belgians were the second-highest purchasers of new cars in Europe last year, according to figures published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) this week.
Luxembourg led the 2023 rankings with 74 new cars per 1,000 inhabitants, although Belgium was not far behind in second place with 41 new vehicles.
Third on the list was Germany, with 34 new cars per 1,000 residents, with Denmark (29) and Sweden (28) following closely behind. The European Union's average stood at 24 new vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants.
Overall, Belgium recorded 594 cars (both new and used) per 1,000 residents, which is below the European average of 659. However, Poland topped the list in Europe with 819 cars per 1,000 inhabitants.
Finally, the average lifespan of a car in Belgium is 9.8 years, notably lower than the European average of 12.3 years.
