Employers continue to rely on student workers, with over one third (34.4%) having hired them in 2024, according to HR service provider Liantis.
Liantis based its conclusions on data from nearly 28,000 employers. It found that a figure similar to the previous year.
On average, student workers were employed for 981 hours, marking a continuous annual increase and a 13% rise from three years ago.
Typically, six student workers were hired per employer in 2024, up from an average of 5.6 in 2021.
The data also revealed that the average student worker was 19 years old. Student workers were most commonly employed in the hospitality sector, with about 70% of employers in this industry hiring them.
In recent years, student workers were allowed to work 600 hours annually at a preferential rate. The new government agreement plans to increase this limit to 650 hours per year.
