Apple is now producing one in five of its iPhones in India, according to Bloomberg.

The US tech giant has accelerated its assembly operations in the South Asian country to reduce its dependency on Chinese production.

In the twelve months leading up to March, Apple had iPhones worth $22 billion assembled in India. This represents a production increase of nearly 60% compared to the previous year. The figure is based on the estimated factory value, not the higher retail price.

Apple began shifting its supply chain to India during the pandemic when strict lockdowns in China disrupted production. Most of the iPhones made in India are assembled at Foxconn’s plant in South India.

Bloomberg sources indicate that the company sped up iPhone shipments from India to the US after President Donald Trump announced plans for reciprocal import tariffs. Smartphones are now exempt from these tariffs.

US tariffs on imports from China also have exceptions for smartphones and other electronics. A representative from the analytical firm Evercore stated that this is a “great relief” for Apple, as costs would have significantly increased otherwise.

Despite Trump’s desire for iPhones to be produced in the US, it is unlikely that Apple will relocate its production there in the short term, as this would require a significant American workforce.
