Tourists still massively prefer to rent a car with the traditional combustion engine when they're on holiday.
The share of electric vehicle bookings is only 0.22%, according to an estimate provided by German car rental price comparison platform Billiger Mietwagen, Belga News Agency reports.
“There is a clear preference for the combustion engine because these types of vehicles are offered in greater numbers by rental providers and the public is more familiar with them,” explains a spokesperson for the platform.
He adds that in the US, Spain and Germany, there is now a fairly wide range of electric vehicles. But these cars are in general more expensive and tourists don’t want to bother looking for charging stations and waste time waiting next to a charging station.
In addition, the proportion of accommodation in Europe that offers on site charging solutions is quite low.
Spain is the country with most bookings for electric vehicles, the platform notes. The country is investing in recharging facilities and in more parking spaces reserved for electric vehicles, especially in tourist areas, where cars can be recharged free of charge.
