Google began the roll out of its new, innovative artificial intelligence (AI) model Gemini on Wednesday.

This AI technology aims to compete with OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT) and Microsoft, offering features from consumer apps to enterprise computing capabilities. "This is our most significant, gifted and all-encompassing AI model," Google DeepMind's Vice President Eli Collins said during a press conference.

Collins proceeded to share a demonstration video, showing a user interacting with Gemini. The AI system identified objects in images and videos, played music, and answered analytical questions, explaining its 'reasoning'.

"The new model has sophisticated reasoning abilities and advanced coding capabilities from inception," Collins explained. Google, meanwhile, described the launch of Gemini as a "major milestone in the evolution of AI and the beginning of a new era."

Available from today, Gemini features prominently in Google's latest Pixel smartphones. Users recording audio via the Recorder app can ask the AI to summarise their speech. Furthermore, it can suggest responses in chat apps, starting with WhatsApp.

Gemini is also integrated into Google's conversational robot, Bard. Currently only proficient in English, plans to introduce more languages are on the horizon. In addition, Google plans to incorporate this AI into its Chrome browser and search engine within the coming months.
