A new Dutch-language municipal primary school is being built in the Brussels municipality of Ixelles, funded by a €3.65 million subsidy from the Flemish Community Commission (VGC), Brussels Minister for Dutch-speaking Education Sven Gatz announced on Friday.
In 2019, Minister Gatz, Ixelles Mayor Christos Doulkeridis, and Deputy Mayor Els Gossé agreed to establish a new Dutch-speaking primary school for 250 pupils in Ixelles, known in Dutch as Elsene. The VGC has now fulfilled its promise to provide funding for the project.
The site at 120-126 Graystraat will first see the thorough renovation of an existing French-language nursery school with a modernist façade to convert it into a nursery and primary school for Dutch-speaking education.
This will be followed by the construction of new buildings, including a gymnasium, classrooms, and multipurpose spaces.
“The school gates will open on 1 September 2026,” said Minister Gatz, who is responsible for education and school construction within the VGC. “The entire primary school for 250 pupils will be ready by September 2028.”
The total cost is estimated at around €9 million, with €1.8 million financed by the Flemish Community.
