The annual election of the German Wine Queen is set for significant changes.
For the first time in nearly 80 years, men will be allowed to compete for the role of ambassador of German wine, the Deutsche Weininstitut in Bodenheim has announced.
Since 1949, the Weininstitut has organised the election of “die Deutsche Weinkönigin”. The winner becomes the face of the German wine sector for a year.
Candidates from 13 wine regions compete in the finale in Rhineland-Palatinate, where they must identify grape varieties in a blind tasting. This year, however, “die Deutsche Weinkönigin” has been renamed to “der Deutschen Weinmajestät”, as men are now permitted to participate.
During the finale on 26 September in Neustadt, two men will indeed showcase their wine expertise.
If one of them wins, he will be titled “Deutscher Weinkönig” for twelve months and will receive a livery collar instead of the traditional crown.
