Migrants granted asylum in Hungary who wish to move to Brussels will be assisted by the Hungarian authorities, Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Tuesday at a press conference at the European Parliament.

A month ago, there was uproar over a threat by the Hungarian government to bus asylum seekers to Brussels. The government had proposed offering these “illegal migrants a free, one-way trip to Brussels,” in the words of State Secretary Bence Rétvàri.

However, Prime Minister Orban has now clarified that the situation will not be as severe as it seemed in September.

“This will happen,” Orban responded to a question regarding the threat. He clarified that this would not involve people without residence papers.

“Of course, we will respect European rules and regulations, but if someone granted asylum in Hungary wants to come to Brussels, we will help that person,” he elaborated.

Due to Hungary’s stringent asylum policy, which has been condemned multiple times by the European Court of Justice, the country receives very few asylum seekers.

According to the European Union Asylum Agency, only 13 asylum applications were submitted in Hungary in the first six months of this year. Seven of these applications were approved.
