South Korea’s lifting of martial law demonstrates the country’s commitment to the rule of law, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on Tuesday, while the European Union reaffirmed its ties with Seoul.

"I believe the announcement of the end of martial law indicates South Korea’s continued dedication to the rule of law," said the NATO chief during a press conference in Brussels.

President Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law late on Tuesday but rescinded it just six hours later under pressure from South Korean lawmakers and the general public.

"The European Union welcomes the lifting of martial law after the National Assembly voted to reject it," stated a spokesperson for EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas.

"We reaffirm our close strategic partnership with the Republic of Korea, built on shared interests and the common values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law," added spokesperson Anitta Hipper.
