The Belgian citizen who filed a complaint against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for corruption has filed another against the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), L-post reported on Monday.
In April 2023, Frédéric Baldan filed a criminal complaint against Von der Leyen for abuse of office, destruction of public documents and corruption for negotiating vaccine contracts via text messages with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla.
Now, Baldan has denounced alleged delaying tactics by the EPPO aimed at covering up the case. The complainant and his lawyer are particularly surprised that the investigating judge in charge of the 'Pfizergate' case did not attend a hearing last month to defend his work.
"The EPPO has taken Belgian justice hostage with its various requests," Baldan's lawyer said. "Are there any obstacles to the investigating judge's investigative work?" The EPPO "wants to recover the file, but already believes that there are no suspects."
He has therefore filed a complaint against the head of the prosecution service for "coalition of civil servants with a view to committing an arbitrary act that infringes the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution."
The revelation in 2021 by the New York Times of the existence of text messages between Bourla and the European Commission President provoked questions about the transparency of the dealings between the Commission and the pharmaceutical company, the largest supplier of Covid-19 vaccines to Europe at the time.
