Robert Brieger, head of the EU Military Committee, has advocated for European soldiers to be stationed in Greenland.

In an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag on Sunday, the Austrian general stated that this move would send a strong signal and potentially contribute to regional stability.

Brieger highlighted Greenland's vast resources and significant trade routes. He also noted that the increased melting of ice due to climate change could lead to tensions with Russia and possibly China.

He therefore argued that it would be "logical" to consider stationing EU soldiers in Greenland, in addition to American military personnel.

Greenland, which is largely autonomous, belongs to Denmark. In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to annex the island and has not ruled out military or economic coercion.

The EU Military Committee is the highest military body within the Council of the European Union, responsible for military consultation and cooperation among Member States.

The United States has maintained a presence in Greenland since World War Two.
