The European Union has summoned the Rwandan Ambassador to the EU due to the country's participation in the ongoing offensive in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with M23 rebels.

According to a spokesperson from the European External Action Service (EEAS) on Friday, the EU "strongly condemns this offensive".

"The continued use of violence against the territorial integrity of the DRC," the spokesperson added.

The EU demands that Rwanda immediately withdraw all troops from the Congolese territory and cease support for M23 and other armed groups.

Rwanda and other parties involved in the conflict, are urged to halt hostilities and resume dialogue.

The violence in  the eastern DRC has escalated in recent months due to an advance by the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. They have managed to capture Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, and Bukavu, the capital of neighbouring South Kivu.
