EU will learn from unprecedented power cut, spokesperson says

The European Union has pledged to “learn lessons” from the unprecedented power outage that hit the entire Iberian Peninsula on Monday, a spokesperson for the European Commission said on Tuesday.

In close collaboration with electricity grid operators, Brussels will scrutinise the causes, preparedness, and lessons from the incident, European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho stated.

The massive outage is expected to be classified as a Level 3 “major” electrical incident, the highest level in the European classification system, according to a source within the Commission.

A panel of experts will have six months to investigate the outage and produce a report.

The Commission has refrained from speculating on the causes of the incident, which caused chaos across the Iberian Peninsula on Monday. However, the European executive advocates for strengthening electrical interconnections between Spain, Portugal, and the rest of Europe.

A more interconnected system within the European Union is better for everyone, especially for the security of supply, the Commission emphasised.
