On Thursday, the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU announced that an agreement on the sanctions had been found in a 'record time' following three days of diplomatic talks.
In the past week, news came out that the EU was seeking to investigate the use of Iranian drones by Russian troops in the war they have been waging in Ukraine, before validating any future sanctions.

This was followed by Ukrainian claims that their air force had destroyed 223 Shahed-136 drones since mid-September, which has since been verified by the EU.
As a result, ambassadors from all 27 EU Member States reached an agreement on Thursday on the form of sanctions to impose.
These sanctions include freezing of assets in the EU, ban on entry into the territory, and ban on financing from the EU, and has been targeted towards three individuals and an entity "responsible for delivering drones." Furthermore, these sanctions may extend to four additional Iranian entities.
