Hidden Belgium: Salon de thé Claude

Claude de Burie was an actor in a former life. Some years ago, he decided to create a romantic tea room next to Antwerp’s St Borromeus Church. ‘A fairy tale for adults,’ in his words.

Claude recently moved his tea room to a hidden house at the end of an ancient lane. Here he has created another rococo retreat furnished with antique furniture and oil paintings.

Claude likes to spoil his guests with his lavish breakfasts and lunches, while his generous English afternoon teas include sandwiches, homemade scones and cakes by patisserie Del Rey. Not cheap. But terribly chic.

Derek Blyth’s hidden secret of the day: Derek Blyth is the author of the bestselling “The 500 Hidden Secrets of Belgium”. He picks out one of his favourite hidden secrets for The Brussels Times every day.
