A Romanian court has overturned an earlier ruling allowing British citizen Andrew Tate, who was charged in June 2023 with rape, human trafficking and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, to travel freely within the European Union.

The appeal court, petitioned by the prosecutor’s office after a lower court in Bucharest had lifted Tate's travel restrictions on 5 July, deemed his request to leave Romania baseless.

The 37-year-old influencer and his brother Tristan, 35, were arrested in late 2022. Both are under judicial control and prohibited from leaving the country, a status reviewed every 60 days.

“We respect this decision,” their lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, said in a statement to the press.

Charged in June 2023, the Tates are accused of entrapping women by feigning to love them, and then forcing them into participating in pornographic films. Tate also faces two rape charges.

The brothers — who deny all the allegations — are also targeted by a European Arrest Warrant issued by the British authorities for similar offences.

Andrew Tate lives with his brother in a villa near the Romanian capital, Bucharest. He was recently seen onstage with American-Moroccan rapper French Montana at a Black Sea Coast festival.

Born in the United States in 1986, Andrew Tate has resided in Romania for several years, praising its “freedom” and “accessible corruption.” Banned from Instagram and TikTok for misogynistic comments, the kickboxer has 9.7 million followers on social platform X, where he gives advice to help men become wealthy.
