Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his US counterpart Joe Biden not to “play with fire” on Taiwan during a two-hour phone call on Thursday.
“Those who play with fire will eventually burn themselves,” Chinese State media quoted Xi as telling Biden. The United States must adhere to the so-called one-China principle, the Chinese president added.
According to this principle, Taiwan is part of China and therefore not independent.
Washington's actions must be consistent with its words, Xi was quoted by Chinese state media as telling Biden.
Both heads of state called the conversation “deep and sincere”.
