Iran said on Thursday it was considering a “proportionate and firm” response after Germany announced that it would seek EU sanctions against it following the crackdown on protests over the death of Mahsa Amini.
"Provocative, interventionist and undiplomatic positions do not show maturity and wisdom,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian tweeted, addressing his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock.
The head of German diplomacy had said the day before that EU countries “are working intensively on the next sanctions package."
"We want to adopt it next week. We will not stop,” she added. “We support the men and women of Iran, not just today, but for as long as it takes.”
Amir-Abdollahian warned in response that “undermining long-standing relations has long-term consequences."
"Germany can choose between joint action in the face of challenges or confrontation," he added. "Our response will be proportionate and firm.”
EU foreign ministers are due to meet in Brussels on Monday.
Iran has been rocked by protests since the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman of Kurdish origin.
Amini died on 16 September, three days after she was arrested in Tehran by morality police for violating a strict dress code that requires women to wear veils in public.
