Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) are staging fresh protests at various airports across Europe and North America today.
The demonstrators are deploying beach umbrellas and deck chairs in their peaceful protest against unnecessary air travel and the “destructive effect” of aviation on the climate. An XR spokesperson has assured that the protest will not cause obstruction to passengers.
In the Netherlands, protest actions are scheduled to take place at Schiphol airport at midday and Maastricht Aachen at 10:30.
Last week saw similar demonstrations at multiple European airports, with certain activists even glueing themselves onto a runway at Cologne-Bonn airport in Germany.
These collective actions are being coordinated by multiple organisations under the umbrella name “Oil Kills”. Their mission statement calls for a halt to all use of oil, gas and coal from 2030 onwards.
