The €9 monthly public transport ticket that Germany has been trying out since June has slashed CO2 emissions by 1.8 million tonnes, official figures show.

The ticket allows users to take regional and local trains, subways, trams and buses throughout the country. It has reduced CO2 emissions by 1.8 million tonnes by prompting many travellers to leave their cars at home, according to calculations by the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV).

About 10% of users said they refrained from using their cars on at least one journey per week, according to a survey by the federation, conducted on 6,000 people per week since June.

A total of 52 million tickets have been sold. Ten million people who already had monthly subscriptions also made use of them, according to VDV.

Due to a lack of adequate transport, people in rural areas rarely used the ticket, which will no longer be available from midnight on Wednesday.
