German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, under pressure to approve a supply of tanks to Kyiv, promised in Davos to continue his support for Ukraine, without specifying exactly how he would do so.

At the end of his speech to the World Economic Forum (WEF) on innovation and the German political climate, the chancellor was asked an explicit question about Leopard 2 tanks, which Kyiv had requested. Several countries, including Poland, are willing to provide them.

Germany supports Ukraine not only with financial resources and humanitarian aid, but also with arms, the German Chancellor responded. He reiterated that Germany had already sent in weapons since the Russian invasion, including rocket launchers and armoured vehicles. He did not, however, include the word “tank.”

In two days, a crucial meeting on military support for Ukraine will take place at the Ramstein US Base in Germany.

The leaders of Finland, Lithuania, Poland and the United Kingdom called on Scholz on Tuesday to give his approval for the delivery of the tanks.

Germany was previously criticized by Kyiv for its cautious approach to providing Ukraine with weapons systems.
