More than 110 people die in floods in Rwanda

More than 110 people have died in floods and mudslides caused by heavy rains in Rwanda, the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA) said on Wednesday, citing reports from local authorities.

The rains began on Tuesday evening and lasted throughout the night, the RBA, which oversees state-owned broadcast media, reported.

Many people were injured in the floods and mudslides that followed, while dozens of houses were destroyed.

Rescue operations began on Wednesday morning, resulting in the discovery of the bodies of 95 people in the Western Province and at least 14 in the Northern Province. Deaths have also been reported in other parts of the country.

The rainy season is prone to landslides, in Rwanda as elsewhere in East Africa.
