Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny’s latest trial will begin as scheduled on 6 June, a Moscow court has ruled.
Mr. Navalny will therefore not be given extra time to prepare before the reading of the detailed indictment, as he had requested.
The anti-corruption activist is on trial for “extremism” and faces a worst-case sentence of 30 years in prison. He is already serving a nine-year sentence in a prison camp, where he is regularly placed in solitary confinement. He has already served two other sentences.
Aged 46, he is considered by the international community to be a political prisoner.
In total, the Russian prosecution has brought seven charges against Alexei Navalny, including creating, financing and participating in an extremist organisation, inciting extremism and trivialising Nazism. Navalny rejects these charges.
