A dog was found by police on Tuesday on the outskirts of Geneva after travelling 163 kilometres in a single night from the house she had escaped from in the Swiss capital Bern, local newspaper La Tribune de Genève reported on Thursday.
The dog was apparently trying to find her owners, who had left her with a friend to spend a holiday in Germany. The animal therefore wandered away from them, escaping in a westerly direction.
Police officers found the animal, who was visibly tired, after receiving a call in the early hours of the morning alerting them to the presence of a dog wandering alone on the road.
By scanning her identification chip, police then discovered that the dog, a border terrier named Lucky, belonged to a family living in the canton of Bern, from where she had escaped the previous night.
The distance travelled by the animal was equivalent to a journey of around two and a half hours by car, a feat that some vets justify by the stamina that this breed of dog can demonstrate.
