Scandinavia is dealing with flooding, fires and water damage in the wake of Storm Hans, which has dumped large amounts of rain in both Sweden and Norway.

Rail, sea and air traffic in both countries have experienced delays, closures and cancellations, and many roads were also submerged.

Near Hudiksvall, around 300 kilometres north of Stockholm, two carriages of a passenger train derailed, but no one was injured. On Sunday, more than 25,000 lightning strikes were counted in Sweden and in Malmö, a major power cut affected more than 5,000 homes, according to SVT radio. Numerous flooded cellars and houses were also reported in the Västernorrland region.

Norwegian meteorologists are also expecting the situation in the country to worsen and the storm to be one of the most violent in 25 years. The National Meteorological Institute has placed large parts of southern Norway on alert until Tuesday evening.

Landslide warnings have also been issued in several municipalities and the authorities are urging residents to telework.

Denmark, too, was affected on Monday by very bad weather, accompanied by rain and thunderstorms.
