The Czech government on Wednesday froze all Russian-owned real estate within its territory and placed the company that manages Russian assets abroad on its sanctions list.

“The freeze of Russian state property has been approved,” Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky announced online. “This marks the end of trade activities used by Russia to finance the murder of Ukrainians,” he added.

The firm’s bank account and registered property are frozen, preventing any potential sale.

These measures do not affect Russia’s diplomatic missions in the Czech Republic, including its embassy in Prague.

A member of both the EU and NATO, the Czech Republic is a staunch supporter of Ukraine. Prague has provided significant humanitarian and military aid to Kyiv, and accommodated over half a million Ukrainian refugees.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba lauded Wednesday’s decision. He praised Prague for this “principled step,” adding that all countries should follow suit.

He also stated on X (former Twitter) that, “Russian money should be used for the rehabilitation of Ukraine rather than the commission of murders and destruction.”
