The headless body of an unidentified man was discovered on Sunday in a garden shed in Limoges, France, the city's public prosecutor confirmed on Thursday.

Saw marks were found on bones during an autopsy, which revealed that they belonged to a man "whose head is missing," Limoges public prosecutor Baptiste Porcher said.

The owner of a detached house in the north of the city had decided to inspect her garden shed on December 31, after noticing "a nauseating smell." When she opened some "boxes," she was horrified to discover human remains with "flesh still on them," and called the police, Porcher said.

Questioned as a witness, the woman told the police she had seen her ex-husband, from whom she had been separated for many years, deposit bags in the shed in April 2022, with the help of his brother.

The two men were arrested on Tuesday, in a state of intoxication, and taken into police custody as part of an investigation into murder and concealment of a corpse. Aged 46 and 54, they "have small criminal records for acts of violence and traffic offences," Prosecutor Porcher said.

The two men, who deny the facts, were referred to the public prosecutor's office on Wednesday evening in connection with a judicial investigation.

Scientific and anthropological analyses have been carried out to identify the victim, whose identity "remains unknown," added the public prosecutor.
