It may be a few days before Halloween, but the animals of Antwerp Zoo have already received their treat - a Halloween pumpkin to enjoy.
"We treated them to a tasty batch of pumpkins, big and small," the zoo said in a press release. "It is great to see how our triplet cubs explore them, how our chimpanzees gobble them up and how our meerkats discover them from all sides. Happy Halloween!"
The triplets in question are the current local celebrities of the zoo, making headlines across Belgium as the first lion cubs born in the zoo almost ten years.
The longstanding tradition of pumpkins in the zoo is more than just an opportunity for a good photo, providing the animals with an unusual treat, separate from their regular diet.
"They are regularly offered extra enrichment with different textures, scents and tastes," Zoo Planckendael, which has given its animals pumpkins in the past, explained.
