The rucksack of Natacha de Crombrugghe, the young Belgian tourist who has been missing for two weeks, has been found in her Peruvian hotel as a massive search is underway.

The 28-year-old's family has flown to the Andes under the care of the Belgian foreign ministry. Sarah Durant, spokesperson for the Crown Prosecutor's office in Brussels, confirmed Peruvian press reports that the search – using drones, police, mountain guides and volunteers – had produced the items but no conclusive information.

"I can confirm that a backpack has been found in the hotel where she was staying before her disappearance," Durant said. "We are currently looking into what we can deduce from the contents. For the moment, though, there is no further information we can relay."

Peruvian newspapers earlier reported that women's clothes had been found in a remote area near where a Belgian tourist went missing, with RPP Noticias reporting that the garments have been passed to the family for identification.

Missing since January 20, Natacha's parents are in the care of the Belgian embassy, but did not respond immediately when asked if they recognised any of the items.

Natacha's father Eric agreed to leave all communication to the authorities after a Facebook appeal for help saw the Belgian foreign ministry step in at the weekend.
