After Australia closed its borders to everyone except citizens and permanent residents in March 2020, it is now reopening to those who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and have a valid visa.
The country began a phased reopening of its borders last year, as it started allowing international students and work visa holders back in, reports the Belga News Agency.
"The wait is over," Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Sunday. "There are more than 1.2 million people around the world who have visas and who are welcome. Some 56 flights will land in Australia in the next 24 hours, and that number will only increase."
However, the quarantine requirements maintained by Australia's states and territories remain in place, as do the restrictions they have placed on the number of international arrivals.
