Donald Trump’s lawyers have requested a postponement of the sentencing hearing for the 78-year-old president-elect.

The hearing is related to Trump’s conviction in the infamous hush money case.

The delay would allow time for his legal team to file an appeal.

According to Trump’s lawyers, filing the appeal should automatically put the current process on hold. If this does not occur, they have asked Judge Juan Merchan to pause the proceedings and reschedule the sentencing.

Last week, Judge Merchan announced that Trump would receive his sentence on Friday, but indicated that he was not inclined to impose a prison sentence.

Merchan believes an “unconditional discharge” is the best option, meaning Trump would not face jail time or a fine but would still have a criminal record.

The case involves hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had an affair with Trump.

She received the payments from Trump’s then lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, before the 2016 presidential election.

Last year, a jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to conceal the repayment to Cohen

On 20 January, he will become the first US president-elect ever to be sworn in with a criminal conviction
