Belgian footballer Eden Hazard will leave Real Madrid a year before his contract ends, the club confirmed on Saturday.

Hazard, aged 32, and the Spanish club have agreed to terminate his contract. The Braine-l’Alleud native joined Madrid in 2019, leaving Chelsea behind.

A statement from Real Madrid reads, “We have reached an agreement with Eden Hazard for his departure on 30th June 2023. Real Madrid wishes to express its affection for Eden Hazard and wishes him and his family all the best in their new journey.”

Hazard switched from Chelsea to Real Madrid in June 2019, signing a deal worth 115 million euros. Unfortunately, his stint in Madrid was marred by injuries.

Despite overcoming physical setbacks, the former captain of the Red Devils failed to secure a solid position in the Merengue squad, making only sporadic appearances. In his four seasons in Madrid, he participated in 76 matches, scoring seven goals and making twelve assists.

Having played 126 international games since November 2008 (scoring 33 goals and 36 assists), Hazard had retired from the Red Devils following Belgium’s elimination in the first round of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He will be honoured on Saturday, 17th June at the King Baudouin Stadium, during the Belgium vs Austria match, a qualifier for the Euro 2024.
