Union Saint-Gilloise overcome Nice to stay in hunt for qualification

Union Saint-Gilloise (USG) secured a 2-1 victory against OGC Nice on Thursday at the Roi Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

During the sixth matchday of the Europa League group stage, Franjo Ivanovic scored both goals for the Brussels side. The first came in the 33rd minute and the winning goal in stoppage time (90+2). Evan Guessand temporarily equalised for Nice in the 45+1 minute.

With 8 points, USG remains in strong contention for qualification to the next round. The team has risen to 17th place prior to the evening’s matches.

The top eight teams at the end of the league phase will advance directly to the round of 16. Clubs ranked from 9th to 24th will enter the play-offs.

Union will host Braga in their next match on 23 January, followed by an away game against Rangers seven days later to conclude the league phase.
