Lucas Coenen, riding for KTM, claimed victory in the MXGP class on Monday in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, at the Swiss Grand Prix  - the sixth of 20 events in the World Motorcross Championship - becoming the first Belgian to win in the premier class since 2018.

The 18-year-old from Brussels excelled in both races of the event, adapting well to the top category. He achieved two holeshots, securing the lead early against World Championship leader Tim Gajser, and deftly managed his laps to maintain control.

“It wasn’t easy, but everything came together; winning feels incredible,” he said.

Coenen’s weekend triumph fulfilled his expectations amid doubts from others about his consistency. “This victory is particularly sweet as many questioned my reliability," the Brussels teenager said, "but I knew my time would come.”

With a Grand Prix win and still only 18, he expressed immense satisfaction and gratitude towards his team.

Gajser, from Slovenia, suffered a crash at the start of the second race, causing an apparent injury to his right shoulder and forcing him to withdraw.

Coenen said he hoped Gajser would recover swiftly from his fall.
