After a long period of teasing – including a tweet about the long-desired feature on April Fool's day this year – social media platform Twitter has confirmed it is testing Edit Tweet, a function that would allow users to change their message following publication.
"The screenshot below may look a lot like an edited Tweet. That’s because it is, and you could be seeing more of them soon," Twitter said in a press release.
The company said its team is testing the edit function internally, which would allow users to fix typos and add missed tags, among others. A post can be edited a few times in the 30 minutes following publication.
Following the testing phase, the function will initially be expanded to allow Twitter Blue subscribers (only available in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) to edit their posts in the coming weeks.
"Edited Tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label so it’s clear to readers that the original Tweet has been modified," the company said.
Users will still be able to see the changes that were made by tapping the edit label to show the Tweet’s Edit History. "This helps protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said."

Twitter is also looking into identifying and resolving potential issues, including how people might misuse the feature.
"We’re hoping that, with the availability of Edit Tweet, Tweeting will feel more approachable and less stressful. You should be able to participate in the conversation in a way that makes sense to you, and we’ll keep working on ways that make it feel effortless to do just that."
