A German tourist has been fatally injured by a wild elephant in a nature park in India, police report.
The 77-year-old man was travelling on a motorcycle in the southern state of Tamil Nadu when he encountered the elephant, which was standing on the roadway, according to the deputy director of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, cited by German news agency DPA.
Despite warnings from other drivers, the tourist attempted to pass the animal and was attacked. He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital, police stated.
India is home to approximately 30,000 wild elephants, which frequently clash with people due to human encroachment into forested areas.
In late January, another tourist was killed by an elephant in South Africa’s renowned Kruger Park.
The visitor was attacked and trampled by the elephant.
