A young woman from Belgium has died after falling off a cliff in Ireland, the Belgian Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed following reports in local Irish media.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Cliffs of Moher, on the west coast of Ireland. The student, a Belgian woman in her early 20s, was reportedly visiting the cliffs with three friends. According to local media, she lost her balance and fell down.

After the incident was reported, the coastguard rushed out with rescue boats, a drone and a helicopter. It did not take long before the woman's lifeless body was found in the water.

The victim was reportedly studying medicine at Edinburgh University in Scotland. No further information about the victim has been released as of yet.

Not the first time

The Cliffs of Moher are a well-known tourist attraction in County Clare, a county in the Irish province of Munster. The incident happened close to the southernmost and lowest point, where the cliffs are about 120 metres high.

This is not the first time people have died at the Cliffs of Moher: 66 are said to have fallen or jumped off the cliff in 25 years (between 1992 and 2017), according to a local radio station. As recently as 2019, a 26-year-old Indian national fell while trying to take a selfie.
