France’s Sports Minister, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, plunged into the River Seine in Paris on Saturday. Good water quality of the river is essential for the forthcoming Olympic events due to be held there.

The Olympic Games are due to kick off in Paris in a fortnight. The open-water swimming and swimming segment of the triathlon will take place in the Seine’s waters.

However, for these events to proceed, the water quality must be adequate, with Parisian authorities evaluating this daily.

Last Friday, they reported that over the past twelve days, the water was up to swimming standard for ten to eleven days. Rain could potentially pose a problem, as it can cause more wastewater to flow into the Seine.

Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, plans to swim in the Seine on the 17 July.
