A body was discovered on Sunday afternoon in the English Channel near a beach in Pas-de-Calais. This marks the 15th body found on the northern French coast since the end of October, a source told Belga News Agency.
The decomposed body was spotted in the water by passers-by on Escalles beach, near Cap Blanc-Nez, the source confirmed, corroborating information from Delta FM. Firefighters and police subsequently arrived at the scene.
From late October to mid-November, 14 bodies had already been found at sea or along the northern French coast, following several migrant boats sinking, as reported by AFP.
At least 72 people have died this year attempting to cross the Channel to England from the French coast, according to the Pas-de-Calais prefecture. This makes 2024 the deadliest year since the emergence of the small boats phenomenon in the Channel in 2018.
