Lithuania has completed the construction of a wall along its border with Belarus, the Baltic country announced on Monday evening. It began building the structure after a sharp increase in the number of migrants coming in from the neighbouring country.
The barrier, a four-metre-high fence and barbed wire, extends for about 550 kms of the two countries' common border, which is about 700 km long.
“Work is 100% complete in all sections,” Lithuania's head of government Ingrida Simonyte told the press. She said it was "technically impossible" to build a physical barrier along the rest of the border, which runs through swamps, lakes and rivers.
The flow of illegal immigration to Lithuania has increased sharply this year, with about 4,200 additional migrants, mostly from the Middle East and Africa, crossed over the border from Belarus.
The West has already accused the Belarus regime of orchestrating the influx with its Russian ally as part of a “hybrid” attack, something Minsk vehemently denies.
