An NGO ship rescued dozens of people this weekend from overcrowded boats trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea in the hope of reaching European shores.

The crew of Sea-Watch 3 rescued 127 people during various operations this weekend, the NGO reported from Berlin on Sunday. The ship already had 267 people on board, bringing the total to 394.

The organisation is now awaiting authorisation from a safe harbour in Malta or southern Italy to disembark the migrants who had departed from North Africa – although Malta has not allowed the ships to dock for some time.

SOS Humanity’s ship, Humanity 1, said that 25 people had been taken aboard from an overcrowded dinghy in Libyan waters. The ship now has 208 passengers and many have been victims of violence, it is said.

“According to survivors, most of the injuries stem from abuse that took place in Libya.”

Finally, Sea-Eye 4 has 129 people on board and is currently waiting for permission from a port.

More than 62,800 migrants have already reached Italy this year, according to the Interior Ministry in Rome. A year earlier there were about 41,000 in the same period.
