Dutch Crown Princess Amalia, 18, is been forced to go back and live with her parents instead of her student accommodation in Amsterdam due to threats from the criminal underworld, threats that were also aimed at Prime Minister Mark Rutte. She now only leaves the royal residence to attend university, the Royal family announced on Thursday.
Security measures for the princess have recently been considerably tightened as the authorities fear an attempted kidnapping or attack.
The situation is "very difficult", King Willem-Alexander said at a press conference during a state visit to Sweden. Queen Maxima said the threats surrounding the princess are having "huge consequences" on her life.
"She hasn't left the house. The consequences are very difficult for her," the Queen said, visibly moved. "This is not a student life for her," added the royal couple, who live in The Hague.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the situation "terrible" and said he was "very worried", Dutch public television NOS reported.
