The UK is going to provide the Ukrainian army with 10,000 additional kits against the cold weather, announced the British Minister of Defence Ben Wallace to parliament in London on Tuesday.

The winter kits include warm clothing, heavy sleeping bags and insulated tents. So far, London has already provided more than 15,000 kits and 900 power generators, Wallace said.

In total, the international community already donated 1.23 million tools to the Ukrainian army to get through the winter. On Monday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that Britain will provide at least £2.3 billion (€2.6 billion) in military aid to Ukraine next year.

He said this at the meeting of the heads of government of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), the UK-led expeditionary force, in the Latvian capital Riga.

Putin sets objectives for 2023

Meanwhile, Russia's invasion of Ukraine has already lasted nine months, with President Vladimir Putin is reportedly set to lay out his military goals for 2023 at a meeting tomorrow with the top Russian military leaders.

"Vladimir Putin will hold a broad meeting with the Russian Defence Ministry on Wednesday. The results of the army's activities and actions in 2022 will be listed and discussed and the missions for the next year will be defined," a Kremlin press release reads.

Russian state television had recently reported that Putin would come up with an important announcement during the Defence Ministry summit.

Observers consider it possible that Putin will push for the further conversion of the Russian economy to a war economy as Russian troops continue to have problems with supplies. During government consultations last week, Putin had already called for the adjustment of weapon-supply programmes.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly visited the frontline in Bakhmut, praising troops for their "superhuman" fighting in the area which is currently the epicentre of war – as well as being hampered by freezing conditions.
