At least 60 bodies of civilians killed by M23 rebels have been discovered in recent days in several villages in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo province of North Kivu.
The news website Actualité.cd reported on Wednesday, citing a local official. According to Isaac Kibira, the deputy governor's officer in the Bwito chiefdom in Rutshuru territory, the victims were killed between 20 and 25 April by rebels from the M23 (March 23 Movement).
"On 20 April 2023, when the M23 arrived, more than 60 inhabitants were massacred" near the villages of Kashali and Kazaroho, Kibira, according to the online media.
M23 is a rebellion that the Congolese government accuses of being supported by Rwanda – a claim Kigali denies. Violence from dozens of armed groups has plagued the eastern provinces of the DRC for nearly 30 years.
