G7 leaders on Saturday announced the formation of a future “working group” on artificial intelligence (AI), to lead discussions on the “responsible use” and the risks faced by the technology, including disinformation.

“We have tasked the relevant ministers to establish the Hiroshima Process on AI, through a working group built in cooperation with international organisations, for discussions on generative AI by the end of the year,” said the G7 statement, which met from Friday to Sunday in the Japanese city.

ChatGPT, the best-known of them at present, uses generative AI software that is capable of producing computer code, text, images, sound and video. Its rapid expansion around the world has raised serious concerns in various fields and sectors.

The G7 working group’s discussions on the subject may therefore focus on “governance, protection of intellectual property rights” and “responsible use” of these new technologies.

It will also look at ways to counter “manipulation of information” and “disinformation” propagated by these tools.

“We commit to advancing multi-stakeholder approaches to the development of standards for AI, consistent with legally binding frameworks,” the G7 added.

“We recognise the importance of procedures that promote transparency, openness, fair processes, impartiality, privacy and inclusiveness in order to promote responsible AI,” the leaders of the US, Japan, Germany, France, UK, Italy and Canada further stressed.
